The Kind Shark

Text & illustrations by Lena Repetur

This is the story of a little shark who refuses to scare, bite, or eat divers or anyone else. But being different isn’t easy.

Everybody knows that sharks are mean but here is a little kind shark. Her parents are in a panic! They send their daughter to school to study “Anger Studies” and “Swallowing Techniques,” but she keeps failing her classes and doesn’t become any meaner—her classmates just laugh at her. Desperate, her parents take her to the meanest psychologist in the ocean, but... nothing works.
How hard it is when no one understands you—not even your own parents! One day, the little shark visits the library to read “The History of Sharks.” As she reads about the fiercest sharks in the ocean, she almost gives up, convinced that everyone is right and she should just be like the rest. But finally, she discovers something incredible: whale sharks, the gentlest
sharks in the world, who eat plankton. It turns out her distant relative was a whale shark too! Soon, the little shark is sent to a new school, where she makes friends, enjoys her breakfast, and finally finds her place in the world.

David Calì has included this book in his selection of Cinque è for Frizzifrizzi online magazine—Five Books About Unusual Animals.
